The oldest parts of the house are medieval. Gilbert White, one of the fathers of ecology, lived here in the 18th century. The rooms have been furnished in period style. Elsewhere in the house, the Oates Museum commemorates Captain Lawrence Oates, who went with Scott to the Antarctic and also Captain Oates' Victorian uncle Frank, who journeyed to South America and South Africa. The Education Centre is situated in a converted barn, dated to 1541.
